Void Deck Mirror
for: Personal
material: MDF, Mirror, Spray Paint, Walnut
year: 2022

Inspired by the distinctive and often ornate wall cutouts in the void decks of Singapore's older HDB flats, this work explores memory, place, and perception. These architectural features, designed for safety and visual connection, are disappearing amidst rapid urban redevelopment.
This series captures and preserves these unique forms by re-casting them as decorative mirrors. This simple yet profound material transformation changes the entire narrative of the object. Where the original cutout functioned as a window to look through and connect with the community beyond, the mirror becomes a surface to look at, turning the gaze inward.
By reflecting the viewer's own image, each piece creates a quiet space for self-conversation. It invites a dual contemplation: a reminiscence of a specific, perhaps distant, architectural past, and a personal reflection on one's own place within the evolving fabric of the city.
